The most dangerous thing that can happen to a cruise ship is fire, and that’s what happened on Carnival Freedom on Thursday when a fire broke out. Fortunately, the ship was docked at Grand Turk and there were no injuries reported. 

The fire occurred around 7 am local time in the ship’s smokestack and was captured from guests onboard, and on the neighboring ship Mardi Gras.

A statement from Carnival said, “Carnival Freedom‘s emergency response team quickly activated and extinguished a fire inside the ship’s funnel while the ship was in Grand Turk.”

Guests will be transferred from Carnival Freedom to Carnival Conquest on Saturday and will sail back to Florida, arriving in Port Canaveral on Monday morning.  

Carnival Freedom will sail to Grand Bahama shipyard in Freeport for repairs, and has canceled its next cruise. Carnival Conquest has also canceled one cruise and has shortened another as it assists guests. 

Carnival Freedom was on a five-night cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida.

And for the second time in a month, A Royal Caribbean ship has backed into a dock, causing damage. 

The most recent incident occurred on Thursday morning when Harmony of the Seas was docking in Falmouth, Jamaica. The ship backed into a mooring platform, knocking it into the water.

There were no reported injuries and the ship was able to continue its scheduled itinerary.  Harmony sustained minor cosmetic damage to the stern of the ship, which was quickly painted over. 

Earlier this month we reported that Radiance of the Seas hit a mooring platform in Sitka, Alaska, putting one of the berths out of service until repairs could be made.

And finally, did you know you could cruise the Great Lakes? 

Viking has begun its inaugural Great Lakes season with its expedition ship Viking Octantis. The vessel will sail spend the summer season sailing between Toronto and Duluth, calling to ports in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Viking’s second expedition ship Polaris is set to launch later this year and will also be sailing the Great Lakes next summer. The expedition class carries 374 guests.
